Project Description
Re-tracing the site’s contours, the coiled plan and seamless external surface of Howqua House form a gentle extension of a sloping site adjacent to Victoria’s Alpine National Park. Perched on the edge of an existing landing, but visually anchored to the batter of the slope by one face, the dark steel structure folds to create a protected internal courtyard at the cleft of the mountain above. Deceptively random from the outside, window penetrations into the black building skin in fact frame and control the extensive views, revealing the contrasting pale interiors and heavy masonry garage structure.
