Devastated by the Victorian Bushfires, Marysville has been adapting and reconfiguring to regain its normal functioning following the loss of much of the town. Instigated by the Victorian Bushfire and Recovery authority, a previous underperforming function centre (once tavern) was earmarked to evolve into a new central public gathering space. The brief sought to rejuvenate the country-style pub and provide an outdoor eating and bar area protected from the adjacent road traffic and local strong winds. Using an easily constructed timber infill system, the project aims to provide varying degrees of screening from the road, interacting with the users to fulfill various needs. Sited in the foreground of the pub alongside the main road passing through the town; the screen becomes a playful and attractive symbol of reinvention for the long lost tavern.
